SAND 5

This collection of art and literature tends to incline backwards while slanting ahead. It’s a listening to past voices that acknowledges their value while dissembling them screw for screw and pasting them with newer stuff. Our writers conjure new tales from mythological roots, conjure ancient imagery with freshly combined language, have future sex on primoridal plantes, and pay lighthearted attention to the past with characters who “have a soft spot for sleeping where famous people once slept,” as in Saša Stanišić’s “Let’s Go Sleep Japan Soon.” The issue’s art, too, combines classic and modern traditions with artists using doubly exposed analog film and medieval French woodblock prints with an imitation overlay of silk screening.
