“Return” can be seen in the manner of a response, of shaping and being shaped. We wish to go and be a part of the shaping. Even if, at the end, nothing new will have happened. Even if the return must be re-returned. The many-layered idea of return is the running theme throughout SAND 4, and is taken from the title of Michael Spann’s winning prose piece on a group of people who start and end at the same bench after a series of adventures. We also delve deep into the meaning of return on a keyboard, signifying the act of starting a new line, as Steven Schutzman writes in “Horizon.”
