Editorial Coordinator

Want to be part of a creative, motivated group of people and play an active role in shaping Berlin’s dynamic international literary scene? SAND is searching for a new Editorial Coordinator to mastermind our issue production process, from planning our working timeline to coordinating the SAND editorial team, overseeing the copy-editing and proofing process, corresponding with the printing house, and working closely with our Designer to create each beautiful issue of SAND.

For this high-responsibility, varied position, you will need organisational talent, great interpersonal skills and a strong eye for detail. Most importantly, you should be passionate about literature and art. This would be an excellent stepping stone to a managerial position in various aspects of publishing and the arts. The weekly time commitment is approximately 4 hours depending on your workflow.

You should have most of the following:

  • Native-level English with an excellent grasp of grammar and punctuation
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and Adobe Acrobat; knowledge of InDesign is a plus
  • Strong organisational, project management and interpersonal skills
  • A flexible schedule and around 4 hours availability per week (this can be more or less depending on the stage we are at in our production process)
  • Being Berlin-based is preferable, candidates based elsewhere (but in a similar time-zone) are also welcome to apply

If you are excited about this position but are not sure if you have all of the necessary qualifications or experience, please apply anyway!

Tasks will include:

  • Planning and managing the SAND timeline
  • Organising and facilitating the editorial selection meeting and order meeting
  • Liaising with the Art, Creative Nonfiction, Fiction and Poetry Editors throughout the editorial process
  • Consolidating feedback and edits during the PDF proofing stage as an intermediary between the (editorial) team and the designer
  • Supervising and supporting SAND’s Designer
  • Corresponding with the printer and sending off our final pdf to print
  • Attending monthly team meetings at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of the month

Currently, the full SAND team works on a volunteer basis, though we are pursuing further funding options to enable us to pay ourselves an honorary fee. When we are able to pay ourselves, as we have during a previous grant, we split our funds equally between all team members.

We’re a friendly, supportive team of 12 with a range of backgrounds and day jobs, and we welcome applications from all ages and identities. We work flexibly and try our best to accommodate team members’ individual needs and situations. We meet monthly as a full group (currently via Zoom, usually in-person) and have a non-hierarchical team structure.

To apply, please send an email with the subject line: Editorial Coordinator and your CV and cover letter as attachments in PDF format to Ruby, our Managing Editor, via jobapplications@sandjournal.com by 15 August 2021.

Distribution & Fundraising Coordinator

Are you interested in arts administration or management? Would you like an opportunity to help bring a successful 11-year-old literary project to the next level? SAND is searching for someone to join our collaborative team as a Distribution & Fundraising Coordinator, part of a two-person team, coordinating current and future distribution and funding opportunities to get our journal out into the world and help keep us financially sustainable.

Over the past 11 years and 22 issues, SAND has grown from a small publishing project within Berlin’s English-language literary community into a nonprofit with contributors and readers in many countries around the world. We now have professional distributors in two countries, with more opportunities on the horizon, and are looking for ways to make our volunteer-run organisation into more than a hobby.

This transition will require lots of creativity, strategy, and paperwork. We are looking for a new Distribution & Fundraising Coordinator who is passionate about the practical side of organising arts projects, enjoys a well-structured spreadsheet, and can think ahead and scout out new possibilities – but also pursue some of the many leads we already have. This involves working with current and future distributors, finding possible sponsorships and fundraising opportunities, and grant application writing in collaboration with the rest of the SAND team. Ultimately, you will shape what the role looks like based on your own skills and interests. This would be an excellent stepping stone to a managerial position in various aspects of arts management and administration. The weekly time commitment is approximately 4 hours depending on your workflow.

You should have most of the following:

  • Fluent English (non-native speakers welcome)
  • German, including reading knowledge, is a big plus but not essential
  • Excellent email etiquette and experience with business correspondence
  • A head for numbers and spreadsheet skills
  • An appreciation for writing and literature
  • Ideas about funding opportunities and how arts projects survive financially
  • Confidence when leading conversations around the topic of money
  • A basic knowledge of invoicing processes
  • An interest in growing SAND’s local and global community
  • Being Berlin-based is preferable, candidates based elsewhere (but in a similar time-zone) are also welcome to apply

If you are excited about this position but are not sure if you have all of the necessary qualifications or experience, please apply anyway!

Tasks will include:

  • Coordinating with our regional and online distribution channels, keeping track of accounts, and coming up with sales promotions/opportunities
  • Keeping in touch with our independent (non-distributed) stockists in Berlin and around Europe
  • Taking care of the reporting/follow-up requirements for existing grants and sponsorships
  • Researching new sales and distribution opportunities
  • Researching possible grants and sponsorships
  • Tracking our income and expenses and coordinating new fundraising options
  • The opportunity to partake in all SAND editorial meetings and provide input on the content of the coming issue
  • Attending monthly team meetings at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of the month

Event Coordinators

Want to be part of a creative, motivated group of people and play an active role in shaping Berlin’s dynamic international literary scene? SAND is searching for two new Event Coordinators for our collaborative events team, to oversee events from concept to implementation – namely our twice-annual launch party plus other varied and fun events throughout the year, both online and in-person (when possible).

We’re looking for people who have their finger on the pulse of the indie literature and art scenes in Berlin and beyond, and an interest in cultivating community on- and offline through engaging events. For this role, you should be exceptionally organised, committed, reliable, and preferably have a flexible schedule. Our events team oversees ongoing SAND events and is constantly on the lookout for new event opportunities both on- and offline. Over the years, past events have included virtual webinars, parties, readings, competitions, discussions, immersive theatre, and other interdisciplinary collaborations. There is a lot of room for creative freedom. The weekly time commitment is approximately 4 hours depending on your workflow.

You should have most of the following:

  • Fluent English (non-native speakers welcome) and conversational German
  • Some familiarity with event supplies and logistics
  • Ability to create fun, engaging events on a small budget
  • An appreciation for literature and art
  • Enthusiasm and inspiration about new event ideas and collaborations
  • A basic knowledge of Berlin venues, events, and its cultural scene
  • A basic knowledge of social media (particularly YouTube) and virtual event tech
  • Based in Berlin (or within easy reach of Berlin)

If you are excited about this position but are not sure if you have all of the necessary qualifications or experience, please apply anyway!

Tasks will include:

  • Organising two issue launch events and other smaller events each year together with your Event Coordinator partner and the rest of the SAND team
  • Coordinating and curating event themes and content
  • Working alongside our Communications team on event promotion
  • For in-person events: Booking event spaces and performing artists, being the onsite point of contact for all organisational aspects of each event.
  • For virtual events: Planning and running basic tech for live-streaming
  • Developing and monitoring event budgets
  • Fundraising through events to help us print SAND and pay our contributors
  • The opportunity to partake in all SAND editorial meetings and provide input on the content of the coming issue
  • Attending monthly team meetings at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of the month

Currently, the full SAND team works on a volunteer basis, though we are pursuing further funding options to enable us to pay ourselves an honorary fee. When we are able to pay ourselves, as we have during a previous grant, we split our funds equally between all team members.

To apply, please send an email with the subject line: Event Coordinator and your CV and cover letter as attachments in PDF format to Ruby, our Managing Editor, via jobapplications@sandjournal.com by 15 August 2021.

We also accept speculative applications to join the team,
